Essential Tips When Using Microset WEBEST:

• Continuous Fluid Infusion should be assessed and documented.
• Each fluid bag is independently double-checked and a signed patient label is placed on the bag.
• Verify that the solution is prescribed, the infusion rate, and the infusion volume are listed.
• Document the volume infused.
• Inspect the infusion site for any signs of complications and record the assessment findings hourly on the fluid balance flow sheet.
• Monitor the cumulative volume infused and the fluid output as needed based on the patient’s clinical condition.
• Monitor the viscosity of the fluid being administered, the rate of fluid consumption, the decrease in the diameter of the intravascular catheter, the increase in the length of the intravascular catheter, and the increase in the activity level.
• Withdraw the required volume of diluent into the appropriate size syringe and then pull back on the syringe plunger to inject the medication into the syringe using aseptic technique.
• The diluent or drug should be selected through the injection port on the top of the microset depending on the volume of diluent required, the patient’s condition, fluid balance and the desired infusion rate.
• To dilute the drug in a smaller volume, proceed through the valve on the top of the microset.
• Hang the infusion bag and gradually open the roller valve to allow the appropriate amount of diluent to enter the microset.
• A syringe driver is recommended for children weighing less than 10 kg.
• Disinfect the area where the spike is to be inserted with an alcohol pad.
• Push the tip of the spike into the serum or fluid bag without contaminating it.
• Attach the medication information sheet detailing the drug, dose, diluent, diluent volume, date, time and signature of the nurse and staff who reviewed it.
• Refer to the instructions for bolus and opioid infusions.
